The VHF (SRC) marine radio course is the minimum qualification you will require, by law, to operate VHF & Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel fitted with a radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The course is suitable for those using all forms of watercraft whether motor boating, sailing, paddle boarding or kayaking and we will use relevant examples based on course attendees. We have both handheld and fixed training radios for use on the course. We welcome complete beginners, no prior knowledge required and on larger boats, this course is as important for crew as it is for skippers!
VHF (SRC) Marine Radio Course topics include:
Basics of radio operation, correct channels to use, emergency and medical assistance procedures and making ship to shore communication. Also, you will learn about Digital Selective Calling (DSC), Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB) and Search and Rescue (SART) equipment
What Happens?
Prior to the VHF (SRC) marine radio course we will send out a book for you to complete pre-course reading. This will enable you to maximise learning on the day, you should expect to spend three hours on this work. Although indoors, we will spend a significant amount of time using training radios to practice radio calls. Our instructors are keen to cover information relevant to your water activities whilst covering the mandatory syllabus. We pride ourselves on conducting the assessment in a friendly and relaxed manner whilst maintaining the standards required.
On the day our scheduled courses are usually limited to 4 people although very occasionally we may allow up to 6 (we are allowed up to 12). This limit gives everyone plenty of opportunity to practise and ask questions relevant to their boating.
Cost:
Please remember that in addition to the course fee there is also an assessment fee of £70 payable to the RYA just prior to the day of assessment.
