VHF Radio Course for LSC Members
VHF (SRC) Marine Radio Course for Members of LSC
Thanks for checking out this link. Irene from LSC has asked us to coordinate VHF radio courses for LSC Members at a price negotiated by the club. Please note as part of this agreement, the courses will only run subject to full courses and you are committed once signed up. Should you need to change your date we are of course happy for you to find another member to take your place. If the dates agreed by the club don’t work for you, we do occasionally have last min spaces that we would be happy to offer at the same rate to help the club ensure we get everyone qualified.
Course times: Teaching usually 0900-1630 (occasionally 0930-1700), assessment as a group 1630-1900 (permitted times, may be shorter). Assessment usually taken same day but may be pre-agreed for an alternative time.
Certification and assessments are completed by the RYA but arranged by us for you.
Course cost: £65pp (reduced rate for LSC members due to numbers – usually £99) plus RYA assessment fee £76 (paid direct to RYA). Payment details will be sent by email once course is fully booked and agreed.
Why not checkout our online VHF Course as an alternative if you are time limited?

The VHF (SRC) marine radio course is the minimum qualification you will require, by law, to operate VHF & Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel fitted with a radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The course is suitable for those using all forms of watercraft whether motor boating, sailing, paddle boarding or kayaking and we will use relevant examples based on course attendees. We have both handheld and fixed training radios for use on the course. We welcome complete beginners, no prior knowledge required and on larger boats, this course is as important for crew as it is for skippers!
There is often some misunderstanding at clubs that you are allowed to use the radios without a certificate if using the support boat channels. This is not the case if the radios are capable of also working on International channels which is the case at LSC. Someone on board may use the radio under the direct supervision of a holder of a certificate, so for example if you hold a certificate and your crew don’t, they may use it if you supervise.
We ensure that each attendee has use of their own training radio for the day and usually limit numbers to a maximum of four people. We are allowed to run the course for up to 12 and one radio between three. We find our system allows much more interaction.
VHF (SRC) Marine Radio Course topics include:
As this is a formal qualification we will need to cover the full syllabus. In addition, we will ensure we cover calls that you are likely to make in relation to your own boat use whether that is on dinghies, cruisers or support boat.
What Happens?
Prior to the VHF (SRC) marine radio course we will send out a book for you to complete pre-course reading. This will enable you to maximise learning on the day, you should expect to spend three hours on this work. Although indoors, we will spend a significant amount of time using training radios to practice radio calls. Our instructors are keen to cover information relevant to your water activities whilst covering the mandatory syllabus. We pride ourselves on conducting the assessment in a friendly and relaxed manner whilst maintaining the standards required.
On the day our scheduled courses are usually limited to 4 people although very occasionally we may allow up to 6 (we are allowed up to 12). This limit gives everyone plenty of opportunity to practise and ask questions relevant to their boating.
There is an assessment to undertake at the end of day. We arrange this for you. Most people choose to take it the same day. If preferred we can arrange this for an alternative day. Teaching finishes at approx 1630.
Cost:
Please remember that in addition to the course fee there is also an assessment fee of £76 payable to the RYA just prior to the day of assessment.
Our standard course usually runs twice a month. We have agreed the dates below for LSC. Contact us for extra course dates if required. We are very flexible and can usually add other dates to the calendar. Private courses available.
Bookings: See the calendar below and book on your preferred date.
