The RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship Course can be taken online or in the classroom.   Please visit our section on online courses page for details of the online course.

The course is suitable for all boaters, both sail & motor, and whether for leisure, fishing or diving.  It is the first theory course in the RYA program.  Its a great complementary course for your Level 2 Powerboat, Start Yachting or the Helmsman practical courses.   The course pack includes an exercise book, a plotter and dividers and access to a training electronic chart plotter.  There is no final ‘exam’ but instead the course is based on continuous assessment.

Course Content: 

Charts and Publications, Safety, Engine Checks, Buoyage, Tidal awareness, Visual and Electronic Navigation, Pilotage, Rules of the Road, Anchoring, Weather forecasts, and Passage Planning.

Length of Course:

The classroom course option is 2 days (16 hours) but could potentially be run over a number of evenings if preferred.

Included with the course: 

You will receive a course pack containing a chart, plotter, dividers, course handbook, exercises and access to a training electronic chart plotter.  On successful completion of the course you will receive a RYA certificate.


Cost is £200 per person (includes all materials) or £500 for a private course up to 8 people (+£35 per person course pack)

Course completion/assessments: 

You will not take a formal assessment at the end of the course.  Instead the course is based on course completion to an acceptable level.

After you have submitted your intended booking, your request will be processed and assuming we are able to proceed with your request, payment details will be emailed to you at the email address you have provided. Bank transfer is our preferred method of payment but we can arrange to take payment by card over the phone or send a PayPal invoice to you. You do not need a Paypal account to settle the invoice using a debit/credit card. We are normally able to process bookings within an hour or two of your submission but occasionally it may take a little longer if we are out on the water.
