Overview:

The RYA ‘Day Skipper Theory’ course will allow you to learn the knowledge to skipper your boat on short coastal passages.

The course will run over 2 weekends, 6 days in total.  You get plenty of time to really understand the content and ask questions.

It is taught by Dom, our Chief Instructor, who is known for his relaxed and approachable personality.  He prides himself on finding new ways to teach the course content keeping it as interactive as possible for a theory course. You’ll see Lego models, model boats and inflatable globes!  He also appreciates a good coffee break so we provide plenty of biscuits to aid brain power.  Dom is a Commercially Endorsed Yachtmaster for sail and power boats.  He works full time around the water instructing and also skippers a variety of commercial boats.  He uses relevant and up to date examples to illustrate the theory.

Please note that you anticipate being allocated ‘homework’ for independent study so it is important to schedule time for this.

Course topics for the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course include:

Basics of seamanship, boats, and equipment on-board

Essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage.

Chartwork, electronic charts, position fixing, plotting a course to steer.
